Last Sunday, I presented the church at West View with our motto text for 2012 – and since this is Olympic year, we chose a text to fit.
The Bible is full of texts that allude to athletics and various ancient sporting endeavours, but I settled on Romans 8:37 as the text to carry us through the year. Mainly I think because it is less about the “pushing towards some goal” of other texts and more about God’s action and the powerful, conquering love of Jesus.
The Greek word translated “conquerers” in Rom 8:37 has its root in the word “nike” which may be familiar to some of you. It means victory and there was also a winged greek goddess of the same name. hypernikōmen is translated in most bibles something like “more than conquerers” and perhaps could be read “more than gold medal winners”!
